What Do Your Dashboard Warning Lights Mean?

That mysterious light on your dashboard could be minor or serious. Here is a guide to the most common warning lights and what to do about them.

Dashboard warning lights are your car's way of communicating problems. Knowing what they mean helps you decide whether to pull over immediately or schedule a repair at your convenience.

Red Lights: Stop and Address Immediately

Red warning lights indicate serious issues that need immediate attention.

The temperature warning light (thermometer icon) means your engine is overheating. Pull over safely, turn off the engine, and let it cool. Do not open the radiator cap when hot. Call for assistance if the light stays on after cooling.

The oil pressure light (oil can icon) means oil pressure has dropped dangerously low. Stop driving immediately. Running the engine without proper oil pressure can destroy it in minutes. Check your oil level and call a mechanic.

The battery light means the charging system is not working properly. You can usually drive to a nearby shop, but your car will eventually stall when the battery drains. Avoid using unnecessary electrical systems to extend your range.

Yellow/Amber Lights: Service Soon

Yellow lights indicate issues that need attention but are not emergencies.

The check engine light is the most common and most misunderstood. It can indicate anything from a loose gas cap to a catalytic converter problem. A steady check engine light means schedule a diagnostic appointment soon. A flashing check engine light means stop driving, as this indicates a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter.

The tire pressure monitoring light (exclamation mark in a tire shape) means one or more tires are significantly underinflated. Check and adjust your tire pressure at the nearest gas station. In cold weather, this light often appears in the morning as air contracts.

The ABS light means the anti-lock braking system has a fault. Your regular brakes still work, but ABS will not engage during hard braking. Have it checked within a few days.

Green/Blue Lights: Information Only

Green and blue lights are informational. High beam indicator, turn signal indicators, and cruise control lights simply tell you what systems are active.

When in doubt about any warning light, check your owner's manual or use the CarFix AI Assistant. You can describe the light and get guidance on what to do next. If you need a diagnostic check, request a quote on CarFix and a local shop will help.
